Sir Thomas Abney School Street map

On Monday 21 June 2021, the Council is launching a School Street scheme on Fairholt Road.

School Street (SS11)

A School Street is where the road(s) outside of a school temporarily becomes a Pedestrian and Cycle Zone during school opening and closing times, helping pupils walk and cycle to school safely. The scheme prioritises the safety of pupils by reducing congestion and improving road safety and air quality directly outside of the school gates. It will also help create a safer space to help facilitate social distancing directly outside of our school.

Fairholt Road, from the junction with Bethune Road to the junction with Heathland Road (including Fairholt Close), will be made a Pedestrian and Cycle Zone between 8:30-9:30am and 3-4pm, Monday to Friday during school term time.

Pedestrian and Cycle Zone signs will be erected at each entry point to the zone (Fairholt Road junction with Heathland Road, and Fairholt Road junction with Bethune Road), and Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras will be initially installed to help enforce the School Street zone. Non-exempt vehicles contravening the traffic restrictions will be subject to receiving a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

Vehicles are not able to enter the School Street zone (SS11), unless they are exempt. Vehicles of parents/carers and school staff are not exempt from the School Street restrictions, unless they have been granted a special exemption. A special exemption must be applied for, and is available in circumstances where doorstep access to the school is required, for example if the pupil/parent/carer/staff member is a Blue Badge holder.

Vehicles that are already parked inside the School Street zone during the operational times are able to exit the zone at any time.

Please note that we are simultaneously launching a School Street at Holmleigh Primary School (SS12). From Monday 21 June 2021, the following roads will become a Pedestrian and Cycle Zone between 8:30-9:30am and 3-4pm on school days only; Dunsmure Road, from the junction with Stamford Hill (A10) to the junction with Wilderton Road, and Holmleigh Road and East Bank, from the junction with Stamford Hill (A10) to the junction with Dunsmure Road (including Godstone Court, Farnham Court, Oxted Court and Leatherhead Close).

How to have your say

The School Street scheme at Sir Thomas Abney School is being implemented for up to 18 months.

When the scheme launches on Monday 21 June 2021, you will be able to have your say on Hackney Commonplace, during the trial period of the schemes.

To find out more information about School Streets, including how to apply for a special exemption, please visit the Council’s official School Streets webpage here: https://hackney.gov.uk/school-streets.
