At Sir Thomas Abney we teach a curriculum that is exciting, fun and creative. When you walk into any of the classrooms, you can expect to find children engaged in thinking, questioning and learning. Our aim is always to help each child perform to his or her best and develop a love for learning.
Each year group has two classes. Each class is named after a tree. These are the current class names:
Cherry (Nursery)
Beech & Cedar (Reception)
Bay & Mulberry (Year 1)
Juniper & Lilac (Year 2)
Redwood & Sycamore (Year 3)
Maple & Oak (Year 4)
Aspen & Rowan (Year 5)
Ebony & Nutmeg (Year 6)
Our committed, caring teaching team enjoy being in an environment where they are fully supported and encouraged to be innovative. We aim to have outstanding teachers delivering brilliant lessons everyday of the week. We use rigorous data analysis to ensure that every child makes expected progress, without the data we wouldn’t know if our methods are successful. Reflective practice and Assessment for Learning or formative assessment techniques are at the core of our teaching and learning policy.
The children at Sir Thomas Abney experience a personally relevant and inspiring curriculum. It enables them to be equipped with the knowledge, skills and values to make a positive contribution to society.
All children follow the National Curriculum and have daily literacy and numeracy lessons. Whilst encouraging teachers’ individual creativity we also deliver the Read Write Inc programme, the Power of Reading programme, Maths Mastery and the International Primary Curriculum.
